Edward (Ted) Barr completed his pupillage in Newcastle; his Master was Christopher Walton, subsequently appointed HHJ. Walton. After a period as a Prosecuting Solicitor (Thames Valley Police, Reading) he returned to the Bar in 1987. He is a Founding Member of Derwent Chambers.
Ted has a General Common Law practice, including: Family Law (both Public Law and Private Law Children Act cases) acting on behalf of parents, grandparents, and local authorities; Ancillary Relief matters and applications under Section 14 of the Trusts of Land and Appointment of Trustees Act 1996; Personal Injuries (including Conditional Fee), Small Claims, Fast Track, Multi Track, and Infancy Settlement and Approval cases; and Crime, where Ted undertakes private defence Road Traffic Act cases (offences of driving whilst over the limit, special reasons and exceptional hardship cases, causing death by dangerous and careless driving), applications before the Magistrates’ Courts concerning Anti-Social Behaviour Orders and Trading Standards work. He has also undertaken actions against the Police and other statutory authorities. He has a particular interest in Firearms Act cases and has a user’s knowledge both of firearms and the applicable law. He also has an interest in Local Government law.
He is an experienced advocate in the Court of Appeal (Criminal Division), the High Court, the Crown Court, Courts Martial, the County Court and the Magistrates’ Court.
Ted was appointed a Deputy District Judge in the Magistrates’ Court in 1999, and regularly sits hearing Criminal Cases all over England.
